My name is Andi and I am a Placenta Encapsulation Specialist and Full-Spectrum doula in Calgary, Alberta. I work with women/people at any stage of pregnancy through any outcome, including miscarriage, stillbirth, and abortion. Currently I am studying midwifery at MRU however, and am only working with abortion/miscarriage clients or those needing placenta encapsulation.
I was trained as a placenta encapsulation specialist through PBi in 2008 and as a birth doula with DONA International in June 2009. I also took the postpartum doula training in 2009 and completed the Loss Doula training through LDI (Loss Doulas International) in August 2016. I have attended a variety of births including those in hospitals, at home, in birth centres as well as waterbirths in a variety of locations. I believe in every woman’s/person’s right to experience empowerment, receive education and be supported during the birthing process, which can help ease the transition from pregnancy to motherhood/parenthood.
In April 2010 I travelled to The Farm to learn from some of the highest regarded Midwives in the birth community. Ina May Gaskin, Pamela Hunt, and the rest of The Farm Midwives were an invaluable source of resource and information. My experience at The Farm really confirmed my calling to birth work.
Aside from my DONA Birth Doula training and the Midwifery Assistant Training, I have attended various conferences and workshops about pregnancy, childbirth, reproductive rights and parenting. I became certified as a Holistic Advanced Doula through The Matrona in July 2017. What I haven’t learnt from my own birth experiences of my four children, I have most certainly learnt from seeking knowledge and supporting women and families over the years.
In March 2018 I co-facilitated the first Abortion Doula Training in Calgary, AB. I am passionate about reproductive justice and the support people deserve to have while navigating that realm. I am an advocate for LGBTQ+ issues, and believe strongly in access and support for everyone, regardless of ethnicity, religious beliefs, orientation, relationship structures, gender, employment, legal status, or socioeconomic circumstances.
I think it’s fairly obvious how much I love supporting families (maybe?), so here is a little more about me personally. I have been involved with roller derby for over 10 years and I currently play for the CRD B-52 Bellas and the Jane Deere, along with head coaching Calgary Junior Roller Derby. I reside in Calgary with my two partners, and I am a mother to 4 children ages 12-20 and a 14 year old step daughter, all of who have challenged and taught me more about compassion, unconditional love, and stress management, than I could ever imagine.
**That’s me with the stripe on my head… I’m not scary, I swear.
I love hoop dance and roller dance, and sometimes even combining the two. I love camping, hiking and being out in nature. I am a babywearing educator, and cofounded the babywearing group in Lethbridge in 2007, and co-led the group in Calgary for a number of years.
I graduated in 2012 with a B.A. from the University of Lethbridge in Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology, and am currently studying Midwifery at MRU. Because of this, I am no longer able to take on birth or postpartum doula clients.
That’s about it! Drop me a line and we can chat more about who I am and how I can assist you in your journey.
PS…. I run an inclusive doula business.
